From Huari the road climbs to the Huachacocha pass at 4350 m and descends to San Luis at 3130 m. There is basic and cheap accommodation at Hostal Rotta, also a few basic restaurants, shops and a market. To continue north from San Luis, you may have to hire a minibus (US$15 for the vehicle) to take you the 28 km to Puente Llacma, the junction of the roads for Yanama and Pomabamba, from where you can hitchhike. The road that branches left at Puente Llacma goes to Yanama, 45 km from San Luis, at 3400 m. The village is beautifully surrounded by snow-capped peaks. A day’s hike to the ruins above the town affords superb views. There are lodgings and food is available. From Yanama, you can return to Huaraz via Yungay.
