One block south of the Río Rímac lies the Plaza de Armas, which has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The plaza used to be the city’s most popular meeting point and main market. Before the building of the Acho bullring in the 1760s, bullfights were traditionally held here.
Around the great Plaza de Armas stand the Palacio de Gobierno, the Cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Municipalidad and the Club Unión. In the centre of the plaza is a bronze fountain dating from 1650. The flower beds are planted with blooms whose colours reflect the city’s celebrations, eg red and white at Independence in July, purple at El Señor de los Milagros in October.
