The Abysinnian is THE place to hear rollicking gospel music in Harlem - the seven choirs belt out tunes as if for God himself. But the church itself also has a long, interesting history. Founded by Ethiopian seamen and devout African-Americans, the Abysinnian became known in 1937 for having the largest Protestant congregation in the country. Today, a non-profit arm of the church has raised over $500 million in funds to support community projects. There are separate lines for visitors and parishioners, and though you shouldn't have a problem (considering the church seats 1,300 people), get there early for Sunday holidays.
