Porkeri is one of the villages in Suðuroy. It is situated on the east coast between Hov and Vágur. There is a charming old wooden church with turfed roof, which was built in 1847 and a local historic/maritime museum, which is located in the Old School of Porkeri, which was in use for around 100 years. The new school has special architecture with turf roof. In historic papers Porkeri was first time mentioned in 1350. The name Porkeri is said to come from the word "Purkur" which refferrs to pigs. There might hava been a pig farm in the old days there. The word Purkugerði has later become Porkeri. There is a memorial stone in memory of people lost at sea in Porkeri. The village has lost many seamen to the sea.
