Kotohira

Kotohira

is a town located in Nakatado District, Kagawa, Japan. The town is best known as the site of Shikoku's largest shrine complex, the Kotohira Shrine (popularly known as Kompira-san).
As of 2003, the town has an estimated population of 11,190 and a density of 1,322.70 persons per km². The total area is 8.46 km².
Kotohira features the shrine Kompirasan (Shikoku's most popular shrine) and Japan's oldest surviving Kabuki playhouse, Kanamaruza. (source: http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5450.html)
Its average climate is 16.7 degrees Celsius with an average annual rainfall of 817.5 mm. The town tree is the Rhodoleia, and the town flower is the blossom of the cherry tree. The mayor is Masaomi Yamashita, and the town was named after an ancient marine god named Kotohiragu. A grand festival is held every year on October 10th.
