Pakistan, a nation always in the news for its politics, has breathtaking mountains, famous archaeological sites, some lovely beaches, and the modern engineering marvel of the Karakoram Highway. Most travelers take land or air routes to reach Islamabad, the capital of this Asian nation with a rich cultural heritage. Thrill-seekers proceed to the mesmerizing panorama in the northern region, where the Hindu Kush, the Himalayas, and the Karakorams meet, and where Shu (soft hand-woven woolen fabric) can be bought for less than a dollar per meter. Visits to Harappa in Punjab and Mohenjo-daro in Sindh, ruins of the great Indus Valley Civilization, are highly enriching. Inexpensive three-wheel auto rickshaws and the inexpensive taxis are the best options to explore the cities and towns. Pakistan also has an efficient rail network connecting major centers. However, visitors have to manage with narrow and small vehicles like minivan and jeeps in mountainous area. But the spectacular scenery makes one forget all the discomfort.
