One of the best way to spend the weekend in Sao Paulo is to visit one of its markets, typically there is one in every neighborhood. Saturday is the time of Benedito Calixto Market. It takes place in the square with the same name in Pinheiros, between Cardeal Arcoverde street and Teodoro Sampaio street. This is the market to go to for musical instruments stores! The market has various interesting spots. There are people selling old-fashion stuff, from sunglasses to colored telephone, books, pictures and everything else.
Browsing the market, it is possible to also find old craftsmen, especially making leather shoes and bags. One I personally suggest visiting is a funny older man who makes leather shoes, both for men and for women. He does very few models but the most comfortable shoes I ever had. You won't miss it, his smile is contagious. In the middle of the square is the food court, my suggestion is Arabic food, a little woman preparing the best cabbage and rice rolls ever. But you have a much bigger choice: Portuguese and Bahia food, traditional pastel, Argentinian empanadas and much more. There also is a meeting point starting from 14.30 when a show of “chorinho” makes everyone happier.
Finally on one side of the square there is an area dedicated to new fashion stylists, so here girls just go crazy, because of the very nice clothes and accessories for quite reasonable prices. All around the square are plenty of bars and pubs to have a drink and relaxm and the atmosphere is very young and cool - not so well-known among tourists, but it is really worth to have a look!
