Maurienne is a region which alludes many tourists, sadly. It's a beautiful and clean region of small villages located in the Alps. Wild fruit, even apricots, can be picked while hiking in this gorgeous and untouched area. There is something for everyone year-round here; summer and autumn for hiking and biking, fishing and camping, skiing and fireside dining in the winter and spring.
There is ancient human history in Maurienne, as well - monoliths and other evidence of human presence from over 5,000 years ago can be seen during certain hikes. Experience modern gastronomy and try the famous 'Termignon blue' cheese made by Marcel Bantin. Another perk is that this region is only a three hour train ride from Paris, so though you may feel like you're worlds away, it's an easy trip east for a whole difference French experience.
