The Pays des Ecrins region is a place to go if you want to experience the French Alps - fresh air and hearty home-made cheeses, heady wine and views alike. Being so close in Italy, you'll hear some Italian, especially 'ciao!' This region boasts 300 days of sun, so whether you're here for hiking in the summer, or skiing in the winter, prepare for a sun-tan! Many tourists come to experience the bike races; the Tour de France usually runs through this region! There are many quaint guesthouses and Bed and Breakfasts to enjoy around the Écrins National Park. This is a beautiful area for a romantic vacation for couples who love to be adventurous and explore natural wonders. The mountains still hold ancient glaciers, amazing lakes, waterfalls, and high alpine pastures.
Hydrogeologist Bernard Bonhomme explains how the relief of the Ecrins was shaped by the weather and the glaciers. He is worried about the consequences of climate warming.
Ice Climbing in Ecrins is an annual event. Ice Climbing Ecrins will take place between the 8th and the 11th of January 2009. The organisers encourage an "eco-attitude" to the mountain environment. Free workshops every day on equipment, climbing techniques and essential safety precautions. Films from all over the world are shown in the evenings.
