Mauritius

Colorful and alluring island life in the middle of the India Ocean.

A volcanic island to the east of Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius has flawless beaches of white sand, distinct marine life, national parks, ruins of old settlements, reasonably priced high-quality textiles, unrefined sugars, and cane rum. The most rewarding sweep of beaches lies between Trou d'Eau Douce and Belle Mare. Many travelers visit Grand Bay and Ille aux cerfs for sailing, windsurfing and water skiing, and Casela and Black River Gorges for birdwatching. The Maheswarnath Temple draws huge crowd of Hindu believers. A hike through the Labourdonnais Orchards, with its exotic flowers and tropical fruit trees, are a treat for your senses. Visit Caudan Waterfront and Domaine les Pailles to sample the best Mauritian cuisine. Though inexpensive buses will take you to every nook and cranny of the island, most tourists prefer to avoid discomfort and hire cars, costing about $40 for a half-day tour. The Blue Safaris Submarine is the best choice for a close view of the diverse and colorful marine life.
