Let me introduce this beautiful place, where I was born and spent all my childhood. Bolsena Lake is set on an old volcano (the biggest in Europe of its kind of formation), which has sunk, forming a huge hole that is now filled with water (this happened 300.000 years ago). So don't be surprise to find the sand black, since it is not coming from normal rock but from volcanic lava. There are 2 Islands in the middle of the lake, Martana Islan and Bisentina Island. The lake is rather deep: 151 meters at its deepest. Bolsena Lake is surrounded by nice villages, each of it rich in peculiarities about history, legends, and typical food - so the best way would be to visit all of them, but I would suggest Marta for food, Capodimonte if you want to have a nice walk and Bolsena for history: Saint Cristina made a miracle there! Bolsena Lake is situated in a perfect location, called Alta Tuscia, it is close to beautiful cities such as Viterbo, Rome, Siena, Orvieto, and many more - so I would suggest to use it as a base. It allows you to visit these wonderful cities, but still stay in a peaceful environment where you can relax, swim, ride your bike around the lake, and eat great food (the local fish taken right from the lake is delicious)!
