The “Warm Heart of Africa”

Although small, this landlocked nation in the heart of southeast Africa offers visitors a wide range of cultural and scenic experiences that rival its more celebrated neighbors. Whether they come by land or air, most visitors to Malawi will pass through Blantyre, the country’s financial capital and largest city, which was founded by Scottish missionaries (hence the name). From this southern hub, travelers have easy access to the Zomba Plateau, Liwonde National Park and the lush tea fields of Thyolo, where Britain’s perhaps most popular import abounds. If hiking, climbing, and trekking is your thing, there is the Mulanje Massif, a 50,000-hectare outcrop of rock that is crisscrossed by deep valleys, stunning vistas, and waterfall pools that practically cry out for you to come in and swim. When you’re ready to relax, hop on the Lake Malawi Ilala ferry, then sit back and watch as the ferry traces her slow, week-long route through the country’s renowned lakeside getaways.
