Located on the Atlantic coast near the junction of South Carolina's two main rivers, this town of 110,000 residents is rich in history, architectural variety, and laid-back hospitality. The American Civil War began here: not only was Charleston's state the first to leave the Union, but the war's first shots were also fired at Fort Sumter, which sits just offshore, in the city's harbor. Walking the streets of downtown is like a trip back in time; along with historic buildings like the Old Exchange and Customs House, Fort Moultrie and the Citadel, most of its colonial manors have been maintained or restored to their original grandeur. "Rainbow Row" is a particularly scenic strip of brightly painted houses on East Bay Street that reflects the city's Barbadian influences. Charleston is also an excellent place to sample fresh seafood: Hyman's Restaurant on Meeting Street is renowned for its she-crab soup.
