Capital of power brokers - and occasional hipsters
Neoclassical architecture and a unique layout: Pierre Charles L'Enfant, an architect born in France, was tasked in 1791 by George Washington to develop a layout for the capital. The result is a walkable museum - at least at the very city center where you find all its famous iconic buildings, such as Capitol Hill, Supreme Court, Library of Congress, Washington Mall, the White House, Washington Monument, and many more war and president memorials.
But the city is much more than a row of attractions: Washington has a great restaurant scene thanks to its rich immigration history, and several neighborhoods (Georgetown, Adams Morgan etc.) that are worth exploring! You will then realize that not only civil servants and lobbyists are living in the city (although there are many!), but very common people like in any other city. Still, the combination makes it a very special place. Add all the sights, and you have a great tourist destination!
