Albany

The quieter side of a New York lifestyle.

Albany, in northern New York state, is often overlooked by travelers, buried under the mammoth reputation of New York City. Albany's greatest claim to fame is that it is the capital city of New York. Located along the Hudson River, Albany was originally founded by Dutch explorers in the 1600s. For those looking to explore the more intimate side of New York, its festivals and nightlife will pleasantly surprise. Tours on the amphibious tour vehicles called Aqua Ducks are fun during the summer, but the best way to see Albany is on foot, by walking into any and every open business door. Albany is a living and working city, certainly not overrun by tourists, so it's easy to become a part of this community. The best times to visit are during the festivals, like the Jazz Festival (June), the Tulips Festival (May), and the Winter Festival (December). Also, if a certain band or performance is traveling through Albany, venues and theatres like the Egg will make you feel welcome. Be sure to check out Bomber's Burritos on Lark Street, the biggest and best burritos north of Mexico ... way north.
