Ringed by beaches riddled with minefields (clearly marked, and surrounded by barbed wire fences) from the undeclared 1982 war with Argentina, the Falklands - a self-governing Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom - are a natural hot spot, long a haunt for twitchers, ramblers, and marine history enthusiasts. The Falklands are made up of almost 800 islands, of which the bulk of the activity takes place on the two main islands, East Falkland and West Falkland. Everything outside of the capital, Stanley, is referred to as Camp. Stanley, on East Falkland resembles a northern rural English town, complete with pubs, and well-maintained gardens in front of quaint houses with brightly colored rooftops. There may be no better place than Saunders Island to see rockhopper penguins, the mighty albatross, and a pod of Commerson's dolphins. Volunteer Point is a well-known destination for king penguins. On weekends, keep an eye out for the soldiers in the pubs in Stanley; British military personnel may at times outnumber civilians three to one.

The very fact that the locals are so welcoming, the history is very contemporary and tangible makes this place special, not to mention the wildlife, penguins, albatross, whales, dolphins etc
