Cyprus, an island in the Mediterranean Sea, has mountains covered with pines, cedar, and flowering plants; Blue Flag beaches (an eco-label for cleanliness); quality bathing water; olive and citrus groves; and rich picnic and birding sites. Several well-defined hiking trails winding through the Troodos Mountains are very beautiful during spring and summer. The painted Byzantine churches of the Troodos are a World Heritage Site. Paphos, a popular and interesting destination, is known for foitiotika, embroidered fabric with geometric patterns, and the Aphrodite Trail, which offers magnificent views of sculpted boulders, cliffs, and formations in strange shapes. The ancient theatre of Kourion and Choirokoitia's Neolithic ruins are both interesting attractions. You can sample local cheese, honey, and wines in Pitsilia. Stay in quintessential rural houses and hike through the countryside to experience the rustic life. The best option to discover inaccessible remote areas is renting motorcycles or a private car.
