The Commonwealth of Virginia is a Southeastern state on the Atlantic Coast of the United States of America. By population, Virginia is the 12th-most populous state in the U.S. with over residents and the 35th largest in area. It is named after Queen Elizabeth I of England, who was known as the Virgin Queen because she never married. Though traditionally conservative and historically part of the culture of the Southern United States, Virginia is a politically competitive state with both conservative and liberal areas.
