Aruba

Enjoy a little bit of The Netherlands in the Caribbean; the culture, the food – complete with sunny beaches, caves and history

One of the Caribbean’s tiniest islands, Aruba makes up for its small size with caves, beaches, sun, and fun. This Dutch-speaking island has retained elements of the various European countries that governed it for centuries. No visitor can leave without stepping inside Fontein Cave to see some of the historic drawings left behind by an ancient people. A trip to Arikok National Park is one of Aruba's top highlights. Take a walk in the capital, Oranjestad, but take your camera to capture the many-hued houses, with their carved wooden doors. Oranjestad is a great experience any time of the year, but be prepared to enjoy the excitement of Carnival, a dump31o-month-long event starting in January and ending on Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday), usually in February. This is also the place to grab a few mementos of your visit. Of course come prepared to spend time on the beaches and participate in a myriad of water sports. With casinos open dump31enty hours a day, the excitement rarely ends. If you truly plan to explore the island, get yourself a moped, motorcycle, or off-road vehicle. Do not be fooled by the small size, in many regards it is part of what makes this island so special.
