What this location says about itself

by HotelsCombined

Castle Grove is a Georgian Country House set amidst its own parkland estate approximately 3 miles from Letterkenny overlooking Lough Swilly and approached by a mile-long avenue leading up to its classic portico. First impressions of the grand old house are amply justified: The spacious drawing rooms are elegant and comfortable with sunlight streaming through stately windows and log fires burning bright. All of this provides an atmosphere of tranquillity unique to Castle Grove. The en suite bedrooms are large and comfortable, emphasis is on retaining their individual character, whilst remaining within the elegance and style of a period house with facilities that are entirely up-to-date. They feature direct dial phone, hair dryer, and all modern amenities. Castle Grove restaurant offers excellent cuisine that is prepared with dedication and care by our award winning chef, and served by discreet and friendly staff. The restaurant provides the very best of good Irish food including fish fresh from the sea, tender juicy roasts and vegetables fresh from the hotel garden, all cooked with care and attractively presented and accompanied an excellent Wine Cellar. While at Castle Grove we will be pleased to arrange golf, fishing, pony trekking and walking on request. Guests are able to go for walks anywhere on the grounds or throughout the farm. Gardens & grounds The extensive gardens were designed by Lancelot "Capability" Brown, one of the few in Ireland. They offer that charm and seclusion that one expects to find at the end of a mile long avenue. The large walled garden has a south facing aspect - and here grows and ripens a Fig tree. The garden also provides soft fruits, herbs, vegetables and cut flowers for the house. Now for the History: Castle Grove was built in 1695 by the Grove family, who came here in 1656; however, the original was burnt during the siege of Londonderry in 1690. It was here also that the famous Daniel O'Connell was introduced to the powers that be; that led to him being an elected MP at the time. Castle Grove also had a big influence in the life of General Richard Montgomery who's fame still lives on - the American War of Independence. During famine times the Groves both fed and educated all tenant families.
