The Andalusians say, "If you haven't seen Granada, you haven't seen anything." After experiencing the sunrise at the Mirador de San Nicolas while admiring the reddish battlement of the Alhambra after a night of flamenco in the hidden basement bar El Niño de las Almendras, you'll no doubt agree. The Alhambra, one of the most important secular Islamic structures and the town's landmark, towers over the city. A stroll through the gardens and the centuries-old palaces of the complex is a must. El Albayzin, a neighborhood on the adjacent hill, also dates back to the times of the city walls and shows the influence of its Roma population. While the local flamenco music is nowadays commercially exploited at numerous events, it is still an essential part of their daily culture. At night the city's many tapas bars dominate. While tapas are popular all over Spain, in Granada customers receive them for free with their drinks. Late at night, everyone heads to one of the many clubs around Calle Elvira or to the public plazas where the parties last until the wee hours of the night. Those who want a little down-time should make an excursion to the outskirts of the city: The peaks of the Sierra Nevada are as intriguing as the romantic Alpujarras valley or the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park along the coast, where the numerous hidden bays await eager explorers.
