Despite rapid recent growth, Nerja, some 50km east of its provincial capital, still retains considerable charm in its narrow, winding streets and spectacular location on a low cliff, backed by impressive mountains. There are sandy coves, long beaches and, despite a spiralling increase in residential tourism, most of the new buildings and urbanizaciones have been aesthetically designed. Nerja’s caves east of town pull the crowds and make a dazzling venue for the annual summer festival of music and dance. Nerja also has excellent places to stay and eat.
