Don't think only of the Beatles when Liverpool is mentioned. Yes, they're forever a part of the city (plenty of visitors arrive at John Lennon Airport and make a beeline for the Beatles Story museum). But its other claims to fame include the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Grand National horse race, a rich maritime history, and a variety of arts, sports, and nightlife that earned it the title of European Capital of Culture for 2008. Liverpool is a city renowned in England for producing a number of prominent comedians. But be aware that a local speaking with a pronounced native accent -- a "Scouser," as they're known -- may require patience to understand fully. The most likely place to find one: at a Liverpool Football Club match or in one of the scores of pubs that dot the city. After boom times in the 60's, the city's docks and manufacturing industries fell into decline, leaving a lot of unused space behind. In the last decade, however, Liverpool's economy has recovered, and modern new buildings dot the city center.
