The perpetual "Next Big Thing"
For years, Long Island City's massive decaying factories and warehouses have seemed like low-hanging fruit for a wave of gentrification, and it's location just north of the hipster hubs in Williamsburg and Greenpoint made it the next logical choice for a hipster invasion. But despite the fact that many artists have found cheap rents, galleries abound, and the MOMA-extension P.S. 1 is housed here, Long Island City can still seem like a ghost town. There are a few good restaurants and bars, but hardly anything you could call a scene - this will likely change with time, but for now, Long Island City's allure lies in its arts scene. There are also magnificent views once you are close to the river; sunsets here are unforgettable.
