Head to the metro station Santa Cecilia, and you are right in the middle of this neighborhood. Here you will always find food markets offering a pastel or a hot dog (cachorro quente). The main street of this student suburb is the Rua D.Veridiana, it goes uphill until reaching the famous University Mackenzie. There and on Rua M.Antonia you will find many bars, pubs, restaurants, a theater and quite some history, since this is the street were the military oppressed student protests during the 1960ies. Another street full of pubs and bars is Rua Canuto do Val, just a few steps from the metro station. Don't miss the restaurant of "Espetinhos" (meat on sticks) which is open 24 hours, cheap and good. This street is a famous area of Sao Paulo. On Sunday, stroll around the funny fruit market just outside the metro station, a great experience - everyone yelling to sell at the best price, lots of colors and good smells!
