Leaving Mirabell Square we cross the Salzach using the main city bridge, passing alongside the Baroque old city. Then along the Alpenstrasse to the old border crossing at Marktschellenberg. On the way you will pass the Untersberg, which, if you believe in mythical stories, is a magic mountain. We then follow along the King's Lake river through the picturesque Bavarian Alpine valley. Through scenic farm villages you will then arrive at the Obersalzberg (approx. 3000 ft or 1000 m above sea-level). This is where the rulers of the Third Reich once resided and is where the road leading up to the Eagle's Nest starts (Hitler's former Conference Center). The next stop will be at the King's Lake (Königsee) embedded between steep mountains, of which the most famous is the Watzmann. After ample time at the lake there will be an additional stop in the town of Berchtesgaden, enabling you to perhaps enjoy a Bavarian delicacy before returning to Salzburg.
