Everyone has been to an island, but not everyone can say they've been to a place like Si Phan Don. Si Phan Don translates to "Four Thousand Islands," and they're not kidding. However, 'island' here is a loose term, referring mainly to the islets, sandbars, and mangroves around which the Mekong flows in this unique part of Laos. Don't go expecting awesome waves, hot girls in bikinis and snorkeling -- this is a river, and life here is still firmly centered around the give and take of the river. Dirt paths wind around scenic Don Det, while Don Khong is known for its numerous minority villages; either way, you will be immersed in everyday river culture, complete with scarce electricity and water buffalo everywhere. In a country renowned for slow living, Si Phan Don is one of the best places to slow down.
