Vang Vieng is one of those places that has gained quite a bit of notoriety over the years -- indeed, the riverside bars infamous for being stops on drunken tubing trips, the pancake stalls that outnumber local restaurants, and the Bob Marley/Jack Johnson cd's on a seemingly endless loop can't be found anywhere else in Laos. However, this is only one side to a strikingly beautiful town. Vang Vieng's karst scenery is not only a stunning backdrop but it is some of the best rock climbing around, and there are caves a-plenty to explore. And if the hard-partying is not for you, it is easy to get away by simply staying in the north part of town, where quiet bungalows line peaceful streets. Part of Vang Vieng's appeal is that there is something for everyone, whether you are a grizzled traveller sick of being in the sticks and needing to refuel with some Western-ness, or whether you are a nature lover wanting to find some amazing terrain to explore.
