Travellers who don't have much time on their hands go trekking in Chiang Mai, and as a result, it's more touristy and a little less authentic feeling. Travellers who do have time on their hands go to the Nam Ha NPA, and Luang Nam Tha is one of the best bases for getting there. The town itself is fairly unexciting, with dusty roads, a couple of markets, a few wats, and not much else. But the surrounding mountains and rice paddies are gorgeous, and easily explored by bicycle, motorbike, and of course, trekking. And if you're not the trekking-for-days type, black Thai and Hmong villages are only a few short kilometers away. Tourism often goes awry in SE Asia, but Luang Nam Tha is a place that has managed to find a good balance between satisfying tourists and staying loyal to its roots. And with a percentage of the trekking proceeds going to support the Nam Ha villages themselves, you can feel good about your impact on the local community.
