Nong Khiaw is like a breath of fresh air. After braving hours on the bus or boat, travellers are rewarded with an oasis, dramatically situated on the banks of the Nam Ou river in the midst of limestone karsts. Like most towns in Laos, Nong Khiaw is tiny -- two main streets across the water from each other are connected by a bridge that turns into a town square of sorts at night. Low-key bungalows and shops line the river, but don't think you're going to a Vang Vieng Jr.; the town is far from developed. Days consist of exploring the stunning scenery on foot, exploring caves, trekking to villages, and simply slowing down a bit. Nong Khiaw is also a perfect place to get away from the crowds in Luang Prabang and Vientiane and get a taste of the beauty of Northern Laos, especially for those on a time crunch who otherwise wouldn't be able to travel to far-flung towns like Luang Nam Tha, etc. Tourism may change this little haven the way it's changed other villages in Laos, so get there while there is still some peace to be had.
