From Hradčany Squarea passage in the left portal of the Archbishop’s Palace leads to a steep lane down to Sternberg Palace, where the National Gallery’s collection of European art (Sbírka starého evropského umění Národní galerie) is housed.
The palace was designed in high Baroque style by Domenico Martinelli and completed by Giovanni Battista Alliprandi (1698–1707). It is a four-winged building with a cylindrical projection, an inner courtyard enclosed by stuccoed walls, and ceiling paintings by Pompeus Aldovrandini.The collection shows works mainly by early Italian, Flemish and German painters.
