Budapest Historical Museum

The Budapest Historical Museum Budapesti Történeti Múzeum in the south-eastern wing of the Royal Palace (E wing) introduces the history of the Hungarian capital from pre-history to modern times.

Visitors can see not only remains of the medieval royal palace, but also precious works of art and other items found during excavations. The exhibition on the upper floors of the museum provides vivid information on the development of Budapest, or rather its municipal districts of Óbuda, Buda and Pest, which were independent until 1873. The historical survey ranges from the Stone Age and the Roman era, when a garrison and civil settlement was built in Óbuda, right up to the end of the Second World War and the post-war years. Archaeological finds, tools and craftwork, as well as artistic metal and ceramic items, textiles, photos, domestic goods and other objects convey a lively and all-encompassing picture of life in the Hungarian metropolis.
