In the Middle Ages, this was the site of the walled port city of Qulzum; it was an important centre of the spice trade and a transit camp for pilgrims to Mecca. With the construction of the Suez Canal, the city increased in importance as a transit port for goods traffic in the trade with eastern Asia and also for passenger traffic. During the dispute with Israel in 1967 and 1973, almost 80% of the port and industrial city was destroyed. Although Suez offers few attractions, a relatively large number of tourists can be found here. Most of them are just passing through.
