The attractions of the friendly city of Ismailia on the north shore of Timsah Lake (crocodile lake) are its shady alleyways, flower-lined promenades and the lush gardens and parks.
After the completion of the canal, Ismailia lost its significance, but experienced an upswing later until 1956 as a British garrison. The conflicts of the years 1956 and 1967 strongly affected Ismailia. The city is a traffic node between Port Saidand Suez, the seat of the science and medical faculties of the Suez Canal University, and the seat of the Suez Canal administration. Many Egyptians have vacation homes here and in the surroundings on the Bitter Lakes.
