The remains of the old Egyptian city are visible from afar and lie on a level of the city of Qena on the west bank of the Nile, in a wide arc of the river. Dendara (Greek: Tentyris) was once the capital city of the sixth region of Upper Egypt. The old name Iunet or Iunet Tantere (of the goddess; referring to Hathor) has been shortened to the Greek and the modern Arabic name. When the economic and population focus shifted in ancient times from the west bank to Qena on the east bank, Iunet Tantere remained the main Temple of Hathor, the goddess of love and joy, corresponding to the Greek Aphrodite. Her magnificent temple, in which she was worshipped together with her husband, the falcon-headed Horus of Edfu, and her youthful son Ihi, the god of music, is one of the best preserved in the country. Combine a visit to Dendara with a pleasant boat trip on the Nile. While landscapes and villages glide past, relax on board. Day trips with lunch can be booked in the travel agencies in Luxor.
