The palm groves and orchards are pleasant places for a stroll. Most historic buildings are here and nearby. Monuments from pharaonic timesOnly sparse remnants of temples and tombs show connections to the culture of the Nile valley. The oasis probably reached its peak during the Saitic epoch (26th dynasty), from which most monuments originate. Even though they are in poor condition and not always accessible, the most important ones are mentioned here.At the hill Qasr Salim in the town of Bawiti there are several rock tombs from the Saitic period, of which the tomb of Banentiu with its very well preserved paintings particularly stands out. In the south-west, on the Qaret al-Farargi, which fittingly means “peak of the fowl vendor”, only a part of the giant ibis and falcon cemetery has been excavated thus far. The remains of a temple are from the time of Amasis. In the region of El-Qasr, there is another temple ruin, that of Apries, and slightly south, a small temple of Alexander the Great and rudimentary remains of a Roman triumphal arch.
