The small sheikdom with its 20km/12mi of coastline leads a traditional fishing and agricultural existence. The capital, which has the same name as the emirate, extends along a peninsula which is ten kilometres / six miles long and only one kilometre/0.6mi wide, formed by a long estuary. The Old City, protected by three guard towers and a fort, is located at the northern end. A museum has been established in the renovated fort. The old port and traditional fish market – which is still very busy – are located on the east side of the Old City. The large lagoon is ideal for a few hours of bathing.
