Lampang
Lampang still has a small-town character but has gained increasing economic importance in recent years. The economy is dominated by agriculture, as the fertile plain is cultivated for rice, maize and cotton. In about the 7th century the Mon founded the principality of Lampang, which was originally part of the
Hariphunchai kingdom and was annexed to the Khmer empire in the 11th century. It was brought into the Lan Na kingdom by King Mengrai, but overrun in the 16th century by the Burmese, who had already taken Chiang Mai and Lamphun. They left traces that are still visible to this day.
