Alida

by Wikipedia

Alida (2006 Population 106) is a village, in southeastern Saskatchewan, Canada, approximately 85 km east of Estevan. Farming and oil are the major local industries. Alida was founded as a CP rail station in the late 1800s and its name is attributed to the wife of the first stationmaster. The local area was settled by immigrants from Europe and other parts of North America. Several ghosttowns in the vicinity are the remains of various communities. To the east is Nottingham, which was the centre of the English settlers. A functioning townhall remains here. To the west is Auburton, the former Scottish settlement of which little remains except for a former church and cemetery. To the northwest is Cantal, the French settlement. Cantal is home to St. Raphael's Roman Catholic Church, which still holds mass each week. All these communities predate Alida and the coming of the railroad resulted in their populations relocating to Alida.
Amenities in Alida include a Credit Union, a post office, a grocery/liquor store, the Wayline Inn, Maggie's Diner, an autobody shop, Fuller's Bus Service Ltd, a library, Three Star Trucking Ltd, a skating/curling rink and a nuissance ground. Alida Memorial Hall is the location of popular weekly bingos and an annual dinner theatre. Although the local school closed down in 2005, the booming oil industry means Alida will be an active community for many years. Students are now bussed to nearby Carnduff, Oxbow, or Redvers schools.
Alida is the hometown of the local MLA (Cannington Constituency), Dan D'Autremont.
The local hockey team is the Alida Wrecks. (...) more....
