For the rural municipality, see Dauphin, Manitoba (rural municipality) Dauphin (French for crown prince'') is a city in Manitoba, Canada, with a population of 7,906 as of 2006http://www12.statcan.ca/english/census06/data/profiles/community/Details/Page.cfm?Lang=E&Geo1=CSD&Code1=4617050&Geo2=PR&Code2=46&Data=Count&SearchText=Dauphin&SearchType=Begins&SearchPR=46&B1=All&Custom=. Founded in 1898, it became an important centre for the transportation of grain. Farming still plays a central role in the economy of the area, but its role has been greatly reduced. The current mayor of Dauphin is Alex Paul, a former high school teacher. Inky Mark, also a former high school teacher, is the current Member of Parliament for the Dauphin-Swan River riding. Stan Struthers is the current Member of the Legislative Assembly and is the Minister of Conservation for the Province of Manitoba. Dauphin plays host to several summer festivals, including Dauphin's Countryfest, Canada's National Ukrainian Festival, and Jesus Manifest.
The largest ethnic groups in the City of Dauphin are English/Scottish/Irish 54.08 % and Ukrainian 41.04% according to the 1996 Statistics Canada Census (http://www.communityprofiles.mb.ca/cgi-bin/csd/demographics.cgi?id=4617050) Dauphin has a significant aboriginal population as well.
Dauphin is the hub for the Riding Mountain National Park which is south of the city and served by Highway 10. (...) more....
