Blessed with a gorgeous location and climate, the Okanagan’s biggest and most central town offers more recreational and cultural possibilities than any of its neighbours, but also more of the brash commercialism and urban sprawl that can detract from the region’s natural charms. The key here is to stay away from the ugly highway (here called Harvey) and the characterless grid of malls and housing estates and concentrate on the town’s assets. Pre-dating the town’s unfortunately rapid expansion following the construction of the Coquihalla Highway, Kelowna’s attractive little Downtown and adjacent Cultural District are worth exploring and there are plenty of wineries and orchards to visit, as well as beaches, hikes, golf courses and the nearby Big White Ski Resort.
