Barrhead is a small town in the Canadian province of Alberta The main industry in the area is agriculture, particularly livestock production. The area was originally mostly forested, and still produces significant timber. It houses the province's correspondence school, which in 1991 was renamed the Alberta Distance Learning Centre. It is also the home of Pollard Banknote Ltd, major suppliers of scratch-off and pull-tab instant tickets, ticket vending machines and bingo supplies. Barrhead's official bird is the Great Blue Heron. It was named after the Scottish town Barrhead, the birthplace of one of the area's early settlers, James McGuire.
It is located approximately north-west of Edmonton, at the intersection of Grizzly Highway and Highway 18. Paddle River, a tributary of Pembina River flows through Barrhead.
Barrhead is also known for its large number of churches. The main recreational area near Barrhead is Thunder Lake Provincial Park approximately west of the town. (...) more....
