A large and bustling city within the Bangkok commuter belt, inhabited primarily by fishermen as well as merchants and traders
The city of Chonburi lies south-east of Bangkok on the Gulf of Thailand. It was founded by one of the kings of Ayutthaya in the 14th century. Since accommodation in Chonburi is unattractive, and because it is close to Bangkok and Pattaya, the city is best visited as a brief stop between the two. There are some decent small guest houses on the island of Ko Sichang. Information is available from the TAT office in Chonburi.
Chonburi is the seat of local government for the province of the same name. The province itself has a population of some 840,000 people. The new international
airport at Suvarnabhumi between Bangkok and Chonburi will, however, probably have a major and lasting effect on the lives of people in the area since thousands of employees are now seeking homes in the region. Another project that stands out in the somewhat dreary landscape of the province is the
Eastern Seaboard Project, a huge free trade zone with a deep-sea harbour.
