Follow Route 107 for 72km/45mi from Chiang Mai to the north through a wonderful landscape of thickly forested mountains to the tiny market town of Chiang Dao. It stands atop the Menam Ping gorge on the verdant slopes of the Doi Chiang Dao mountain, which provides a magnificent backdrop with its 2186m/7172ft-high limestone peaks. Close by a
development centre run by the Thai government is researching the potential for cultivation of coffee and tea and teaching the populace how to farm those products. The objective of the project is to provide the hill tribes with an alternative crop to replace the opium cultivation that has been practised here for centuries. Agricultural scientists travel around the villages of the Meo, Lisu and Karen to assist the people with rice cultivation, husbandry and cattle farming.
