The city’s Tarascan name means “where the flowers bloom”. The Franciscan priest Juan de San Miguel founded the city in 1532 and gave it the name San Francisco de Uruapan. The city was built in a checkerboard pattern and divided into nine districts (barrios) which have retained their self-contained character to this day.
