Tepic

Tepic

by Marco Polo

The capital of the federal state of Nayarit, is situated at the foot of the dormant volcano Sangangüey (2,360m/7,743ft)

East of the city stretches a wide plain with tobacco and sugar cane plantations. The city is a hub for traffic by rail, bus or car, and is also a good central point from which to make trips to the coast, San Blas, Mexcaltitán or Puerto Vallarta.
The city of Tepic (hard stone) was founded in 1531 by Nuño Beltrán de Guzmán. In 1711, Philipp V of Spain granted Tepic its municipal charter. The modern development of Tepic and the region however started only with the establishment of a railway connection (1912). Tepic is a convenient Attractions base when planning trips or outings to the beaches on the Pacific coast or to the nearby Indian villages. Of particular note are the cathedral at the Plaza Principal with neo-Gothic spires as well as the church La Cruz de Zacate, so called after a cross made of lemongrass (zacate de limon) which is revered by the Indians in the area.
