Córdoba set amid lush vegetation in the valley of the Río Seco. Tropical fruits grow in the lowlands toward the hot coastal plains, and at medium altitudes coffee and tobacco is cultivated. The mountain slopes are often forested and mighty cedars and walnut trees grow here. Spaniards founded the city in 1618 and named it Córdoba after the Moorish residence in Andalusia. On 24 August 1821, Agustín de Iturbide (general and later Mexican emperor) and the last viceroy Juan O’Donojú (just newly sent over from Spain) signed the treaty of Córdoba, thus acknowledging Mexican independence. It was some time before Spain accepted the treaty.
