In 1535, Cortés visited the bay here. Today the town is an important agricultural centre and also the focal point of the significant holiday area stretching to Buenavista. Annually on 19 March, the citizens here celebrate the day of San José. The coastline in this area has many beaches with great fishing and surfing and where the waves are sometimes wild. Visitors find good restaurants and cafés along the main street, Boulevard Mijares, and a small museum has opened in the Casa de la Cultura. It is calm and quiet here compared with Cabo San Lucas.
