Chapala and its associated village Chula Vista have the largest colony of foreign nationals. Early on, between 1904 and 1907, Chapala developed into a resort when the then Mexican President Porfirio Díaz chose the town as his holiday domicile. On the shore near the Avenida Madero there is a pretty park and several vending kiosks selling ornate woven items. Arts and crafts are also on sale in the Mercado de Artesanías. The large Parque La Cristiana is an inviting place to swim and have a picnic.
