In the last four centuries alone, the Colima volcano (Volcán de Colima) 30km/19mi north of the city has erupted nine times on a large scale. The city also suffered a series of fairly major earthquakes. The quakes are the reason that only a few colonial buildings still exist in Colima (population 120,000), capital of the state of the same name. Colima was one of the first cities to be established in West Mexico. The city extends through a fertile valley along two rivers and up the slopes of surrounding mountains. In recent decades, Colima has developed into a trade and processing centre for regional ranch and hacienda-related business in the livestock, forestry and agricultural industries.
